Wanders Begins Term as Supervisor

Steve Wanders takes the oath of office as a member of the Mahaska County Board of Supervisors from District Judge Rose Mefford.

For the first time in more than a month Mahaska County was at full strength at a supervisors meeting. Following a process in which nine applicants sought the seat vacated by Mark Doland in June, Steve Wanders took the oath from District Judge Rose Mefford and went to work with supervisors Willie Van Weelden and Mark Groenendyk.

Much of the meeting was routine as supervisors held their first meeting of the 2019 fiscal year. The first piece of business was to approve financial transfers to various departments to begin the new year. County employee salaries were approved.

Supervisors held discussion on a wellness program. Sue Brown, county auditor, said the wellness committee was making a recommendation to continue the program.

The base program would provide blood screening to county employees by Mahaska Health Partnership at no cost to the employee. If family members wish to be tested, they may do so at their own cost of $70 or $95 with PSA for men 50 years and older.
