Wanders Appointed to Fill Out Vacant Supervisor Seat

Mahaska County now has a full Board of Supervisors after a panel composed of County Auditor Sue Brown, County Recorder Diane Upton-Crookham, and County Treasurer Sone Scott voted to appoint the top vote getter from the June primary to fill the remaining few months left on former supervisor Mark Doland’s term. Steve Wanders received the appointment by a 2-1 vote, with Scott being the dissenting vote.

A total of nine individuals applied to fill out the term, including: Madonna Bowie, Joe Warrick, Valinn McReynolds, RD Keep, Scott Van Veldhuizen, Steve Parker, Steve Wanders, Sheila Denburger, and Alven Meppelink.

Over the course of June 26 to June 28, the panel interviewed all nine candidates, asking them a variety of questions, including their experiences with creating budgets, how they would handle people who came to them with an issue, and how they would work with others. After all candidates had been interviewed, the panel opened up discussion to determine if they could come to a consensus.
