The towns of Bondurant and eastern Pella took the brunt of the storm.

Amid sunny skies and warm temperatures the National Weather Service issued a tornado watch just before mid-afternoon on Thursday, July 19. Within minutes a warning was issued for northwestern Mahaska County and Northeastern Marion. About 4 p.m. the Vermeer Mile was ravaged and the tornado skipped its way southeasterly in a hit-andmiss run. What the twister failed to damage high winds and rain added to the meteorological excitement.

The tornado became rain-wrapped as it crossed Iowa 163 and moved toward Leighton. Oskaloosa experienced high winds with limbs and trees coming down. One of the hardest wind hit areas was Edmundson Golf Course where the roof was torn off a storage shed and walls and roof strewn closing part of the Edmundson Park road. A power pole and lines came down and the area was without power for about three hours. Farmers saw some damage to crops. The city of Fremont lost power when a line along Iowa 23 in the western part of town snapped.

Locally, Vermeer had the largest amount of damage. The 70-yearold company lost two production plants, damage to several others, and vehicles and debris scattered throughout the parking lots.
