Check the calendar! Is it March already? Fans from Sigourney and North Mahaska may have asked that question as a near-capacity crowd piled into the gym at New Sharon as the No. 3 team in Class 1A was hosting the 15th ranked Savages of Sigourney. North Mahaska senior Cheyenne Shaw’s layup and free throw allowed the Warhawks to remain undefeated with a 49-48 win.

It was a state tournament atmosphere as a noisy crowd yelled support to their respective charges. The two teams entered the game with perfect conference marks as Sigourney leads the SICL East at 9-0, but 9-1, their lone loss coming to Class 4A Washington. North Mahaska was 10-0 with at a two-game lead in the West.

“It did have the feel,” said Sigourney coach Zach Tremmel. “I told the girls to enjoy this. You deserve it. You have worked hard and it’s better than playing to an empty gym. They deserved to play in this atmosphere they just came up one point short.”
