NM Bunts Way Past Tigerhawks

NEW SHARON – North Mahaska had the small ball going and picked up key hits late in the game to post a 9-1 South Iowa Cedar League win over Colfax-Mingo June 24. Knotted at 1-1 after the first inning, North Mahaska broke the game open with a three-run fifth inning and sealed the win with five runs in the sixth.
Mathew Goemaat and Blake Readshaw rapped back-to-back singles before Ty Kelderman executed a suicide squeeze that scored Goemaat, but Kelderman also beat out the play. With two out Logan Shipley ripped a shot down the leftfield line to score Readshaw and Kelderman.
In the sixth the Warhawks took advantage of the bunt, walks and errors to add to the lead and keep the Tigerhawks from coming back.
“That suicide squeeze was huge for us,” said NM coach Kevin Kelderman. “We needed this win. We got the hits when we needed them.”
Readshaw opened the North Mahaska half of the first reaching on an error and Kelderman bunted him to second. A pitch hit Sam Terpstra, and a pass ball put runners in scoring position. Shipley made it count with a groundout to shortstop allowing Readshaw to score.
