NM’s Ferguson Named Fair Queen

Four young women gathered July 16 to compete for the title of Southern Iowa Fair Queen and the right to represent Mahaska County at the Iowa State Fair, which begins Aug. 9. Bailey Ferguson, a senior from New Sharon; Alexis DeJong, a senior from Leighton; Erika Walston, a senior from New Sharon, and Jenna Appleget, a junior from Oskaloosa, were on stage for the judging.

Marvin Knoot emceed the show with judging provided by Lexi Wahlert, Lisa Stodghill and Jenna Van Maanen. Knoot conducted an interview with the women based on interest on their application cards.

Following each contestant was taken from the free stage and brought back one by to answer an announced question, “What would you look for if you were judging the queen contest.” Each contestant talked of leadership skills and willingness to represent the county.
