NEW SHARON – When things are working for you, you just go for it. In the first game of the North Mahaska Classic Softball tourney Saturday Madi McKay had it going. The sophomore pitcher struck out 11 batters and hit a pair of doubles and a single to help the Warhawks to a 7-0 victory over Cardinal. Senior pitcher Emma Deucore tossed a four-hitter, struck out six and hit a three-run homer in a 4-2 win over Moravia.

“It was a pair of good wins for us,” said North Mahaska coach Chris Sampson.

The teams played three games with temperatures in the 90s and heat indexes in triple digits.

North Mahaska pounded out 11 hits including two homeruns in the opening game with Cardinal. Zoe Deucore took the first pitch off the scoreboard to set the tone. McKay doubled with one out and Chloe Bossard doubled to give NM a 2-0 lead. Junior Karlie Chandler ripped a three-run homer in the third inning, which gave the Warhawks a 6-0 lead.
