Local Teams Begin Competition

Teams from around the area and state hit the courts, courses and football fields this week as fall sports season has arrived. It will be a busy season as teams strive for spots in the postseason.

Eddyville Blakesburg Fremont cross country team hit the road with its first meet at Knoxville on Monday while North Mahaska will get its start Thursday, Sept. 5 when they go to Ottumwa for a meet hosted by Pekin.

North Mahaska and EBF will serve up the opening of volleyball season on the road. North Mahaska travelled to Albia Monday night for a round robin event while EBF went to English Valleys on Tuesday. EBF will also play Thursday night at Fairfield. EBF will conclude a busy week at the West Branch tournament on Saturday. North Mahaska’s second match will be at Montezuma on Sept. 3.

Junior high teams will also get started as North Mahaska’s volleyball team plays at Montezuma on Thursday, Aug. 29.

North Mahaska will open the football season under new coach Phil Griffin and will face an always-tough North Tama team on the road. EBF hosts East Marshall to open its 2019 season.
