Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont knew they were facing a tall order when they faced Van Meter in the Class 2A Substate final Saturday in Knoxville.

The Bulldogs were one of the top teams in the state and was looking for a return trip. EBF was looking for its first trip and not lost on a South Central Conference floor this season. However, sharp guard play and a pair of 6-9 behemoths were a bit much as EBF fell 57-41.

But the game was much closer than the final score.

“We got ourselves in such a deep hole in the first quarter we just couldn’t come all the way back,” said EBF coach Travis Stout. “This loss left us short of our ultimate goal we set before the season.”

EBF (20-4) found itself on the short side of the scoreboard four times, at this writing three are in the state field and the fourth will be playing Monday night (Oskaloosa).

“We lost to some good teams, but it doesn’t make it easier,” said Stout.
