Council Hears Plea for Chickens

NEW SHARON – KFC is not coming to New Sharon, but at least one New Sharon family would like to have a few chickens. The issue was discussed Wednesday at the New Sharon City Council meeting.

Josh Gott and his family had several chickens a few months ago until it came to their attention that it was illegal to have them inside the city limits. The family disposed of the birds and began to investigate ordinances in other communities. Gott appeared at the Aug. 7 council meeting to ask the council to put it on one of its agendas to discuss a possible ordinance change.

Gott’s daughters, Alexa Llanes and Hannah Llanes, spoke first telling councilors about their love for chickens and the responsibility they learned from raising the poultry. They also explained how the use of the compost created has enhanced the family’s garden.

Gott told councilors he had done some research on ordinances in many towns and cities, and said Des Moines seemed to have the most restrictive ordinance. He emphasized that no roosters should be allowed. He also said he has grown in his knowledge about chickens.
