There was one thing that the four Republican candidates for Mahaska County Supervisor agreed on at a candidate forum, hosted by Osky News, on May 22: they all live in Mahaska County and want to be the next county supervisor. Sparks flew the rest of the night as vastly differing opinions on two major projects in Mahaska County- the regional airport and a new radio system for first responders- were expressed by the four candidates. Between audience questions and questions from a moderator, little time was spent on any other issues.

All four candidates, Paul De- Geest, Steve Wanders, Steve Parker and incumbent Willie Van Weelden were on hand in Center Court of Penn Central Mall.

Moderator Kathy Rothfus- Stroup questioned candidate Parker, about a comment he made that he and candidate Steve Wanders are “carbon copy” of each other. Parker was asked what residents should vote for him and Steve Wanders if they are both the same. Parker denied that he is the same as Wanders.

“Yeah, we’re different. We agree on some of the major issues,” Parker said.
